Abacha’s Son Speaks Amid Renewed Criticism Of Late Father

Sadiq Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former military leader General Sani Abacha, has expressed respect for his late father, asserting that his leadership continues to hold importance despite ongoing criticism.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Sadiq stated that his father was a target of envy and quiet betrayal, but maintained that history would eventually be favorable toward him.

“The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down. As a son, I am most proud of you today. You indeed are the man they wish they were half of”, he wrote.

He concluded his message with a Hausa proverb: “Duk wanda yayi jifa a kasuwa,” meaning “whoever throws a stone in the market…”—a saying often interpreted as a reminder that actions have consequences.

Sadiq’s comment comes just days after the release of the highly anticipated memoir by former military President Ibrahim Babangida, which has sparked widespread discussions.

A key focus of the book is the controversial annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which Babangida acknowledged was won by MKO Abiola.

The former president revealed that although he regretted the decision, the annulment was largely driven by factions within his government, allegedly led by Abacha, without his full knowledge.

The late General Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998, remains one of the country’s most controversial figures.

While his government is credited with economic stabilization and effective security policies, accusations of corruption and human rights abuses continue to shape his legacy.
