Natasha Sues Akpabio For Defamation, Demands N1.3bn Damages

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a defamation lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Her legal action follows a dispute over her Senate seat reassignment after a reshuffle caused by opposition members defecting to the majority side. She opposed the relocation, leading to a confrontation with Akpabio.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court on February 25, 2025, names the Senate President, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Mfon Patrick, the Senior Legislative Aide to the Senate President, as the second and third defendants.

Marked CV/737/25, the suit alleges that defamatory remarks were made by Akpabio and later published by his aide on Facebook.

According to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer, Victor Giwa, the post titled *“Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?”* included a statement implying that she believed being a senator was only about applying makeup and wearing revealing outfits in the chambers.

Giwa argued that the statement was defamatory and damaging to her reputation among colleagues and the public.

The lawsuit seeks a court declaration that the statement was defamatory and intended to discredit her.

Additionally, Akpoti-Uduaghan has requested an injunction preventing the defendants from making further defamatory remarks against her on any platform.

She is also demanding N100 billion in general damages and N300 million to cover litigation costs.
