Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is set to make a comeback.
His security detail has been reinstated, while that of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda has been withdrawn.
Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, was unanimously elected as Speaker following his impeachment, becoming the first woman to hold the position in Lagos State history.

Although she has not officially resigned, her tenure as Speaker appears to have been decided over the weekend after key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders intervened in the Assembly crisis.
Former APC National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, ex-Osun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Justice Commissioner Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and some lawmakers met to resolve the dispute.
At the meeting, it was reportedly decided that Meranda should vacate the position, paving the way for Obasa’s return.
Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that party leaders ruled Obasa’s impeachment as illegal and directed lawmakers to reinstate him.
It remains unclear when the House will reconvene to implement the decision.
Meranda had indefinitely adjourned plenary two weeks ago following chaos in the Assembly caused by an invasion by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
