FG Directs MultiChoice To Suspend Fee Hike

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has ordered MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to maintain its current subscription rates until an ongoing investigation into its proposed tariff adjustment is concluded.

FCCPC announced this directive in a statement on Thursday, issued by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu.

The decision follows MultiChoice’s request for an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the commission to address concerns over its frequent price increases.

Although the FCCPC granted the extension, it has now rescheduled the hearing for March 6, 2025, requiring the company’s CEO, key officials, and a comprehensive response to the inquiry.

“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is explicitly instructed to retain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final decision,” the statement read.

The commission stressed that freezing prices is necessary to prevent potential consumer exploitation during the investigation.

Previously, the regulator had summoned MultiChoice’s CEO to appear for an investigative hearing on February 27.

Earlier this week, MultiChoice informed its customers about the planned price adjustment, citing a review of its pricing structure.

While the company claimed the changes were necessary to continue delivering high-quality content, the announcement sparked concerns among subscribers.

Under the proposed adjustment, the DStv Compact package would see a price increase, while the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets would remain at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively.

In a notice titled “Price Adjustments for DStv and GOtv Packages,” the company stated: “Dear Customer, please be informed that effective March 1, 2025, there will be a price adjustment on all DStv packages.”
