Supreme Court Sacks Rivers Local Government Chairmen

The Supreme Court has nullified the local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission on October 5, 2024.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur ruled that the election was invalid due to gross violations of the Electoral Act.

Justice Tukur stated that the actions of the Rivers State electoral body were rendered void due to a lack of substantial compliance with electoral laws and guidelines, particularly its decision to continue voter registration even after announcing the election date.

The court further held that the processes leading to the election were improperly handled, constituting a clear breach of the Electoral Act.
