Former President Goodluck Jonathan explained on Sunday why his administration did not implement the recommendations from the 2014 National Conference.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, in Lagos, Jonathan shared that the political climate at the time was too unstable to allow the presentation of the conference’s recommendations, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He acknowledged that the 2014 National Conference would not have occurred without contributions from influential individuals like the late Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.

Jonathan addressed the ongoing questions about why the recommendations were not implemented, explaining that many Nigerians were unaware of the political turbulence the country was facing at that time.
He mentioned that a prominent member of the legislature, who was in his party, mobilized against him and switched to another party, and that there were individuals who were actively working to undermine his administration.
“It was not the right time to present such a document,” Jonathan said, adding, “Thank God for everything. We believe that one day, another government will review it and take it further.”
He also noted that the recommendations were made by credible Nigerians who were not politically motivated, stressing that their outcomes are still relevant for the country today.
