Why I’m Facing Death Threats – NAFDAC DG

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has revealed that she is receiving death threats due to her agency’s efforts to dismantle major counterfeit drug distribution networks in Kano, Idumota, Yaba, and Onitsha.

Despite these threats, Adeyeye remains determined to eliminate fake drugs from Nigerian markets, pledging not to be intimidated.

Speaking in Abuja, she highlighted her commitment to public service, reflecting on her decision to leave a comfortable life in the United States—where she had lived for 37 years—and return to Nigeria to pursue this mission.

“I came back home to serve. I could have stayed in the US, comfortable. But I see my role here as a mission,” she stated.

She acknowledged the risks but emphasized that the threats would not stop her or her team from fulfilling their duty to protect public health.

Adeyeye also shared the dangers faced by NAFDAC officials, recounting an incident in which an officer was severely attacked during an inspection operation in Onitsha.

“One of my workers was beaten and left bleeding in Onitsha six months ago. I once noticed an injury on another staff member’s arm and asked what happened. She told me she almost lost her life during an inspection,” she recalled.

Despite the challenges, Adeyeye reaffirmed her dedication to ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe, quality drugs, asserting that fear has no place in her work.
