The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has strongly condemned efforts to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and destabilize Rivers State, pledging to protect the state’s interests.
Comrade Prince Sukubo, Chairman of the IYC’s Eastern Zone, revealed in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that there were rumors of plans to impeach Fubara.
He argued that the Supreme Court’s recent rulings were being manipulated by individuals with no genuine concern for the state.
“We are aware of alarming attempts by certain groups to destabilize Rivers State and undermine the mandate given to our elected officials,” Sukubo said. “The 48-hour ultimatum given to Gov. Fubara to re-present the 2025 budget is a deliberate effort to stir chaos and potentially impeach the governor.”

Sukubo asserted that any attempt to impeach the governor would be a direct attack on the elected leadership and a violation of the people’s will, who had entrusted governance to Fubara, an Ijaw man.
He emphasized that such actions would amount to stealing the governor’s mandate, which was freely given by the electorate.
Sukubo called on President Bola Tinubu and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to intervene and prevent the ongoing crisis that threatens to destabilize Rivers State.
“Any instability in Rivers could have dire consequences, not only for governance but also for crude oil production and energy security, which are crucial to the nation’s economy,” he said.

Sukubo urged all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and cooperation, rather than conflict, to ensure peace and stability in the state.
He stressed that the ambitions of a few individuals should not put the state’s future and the well-being of its people at risk.
He also warned that withholding federal allocations from Rivers State would worsen the hardship faced by workers and hinder further development. “This would negatively impact the state’s economy and, in turn, the national economy,” Sukubo said.
He concluded by stating that the Ijaw people would not remain passive in the face of political marginalization and would take action if Rivers State was deprived of its economic rights due to the interests of a few individuals seeking to dominate the state’s resources.
The Supreme Court ruling on Friday had annulled the October 25 local government council elections and recognized the legislature led by Martin Amaewhule.
The court also directed Governor Fubara to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the Amaewhule-led Assembly and barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from releasing funds to the state until Fubara complied with the ruling.
