Senate Directs INEC To Conduct By-Elections For Edo Central, Anambra South

The Senate has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize by-elections to fill the vacant seats in the Edo Central and Anambra South Senatorial Districts.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary, officially declaring the vacancies.

The seat for Edo Central was declared vacant in 2024 after Monday Okpebholo was inaugurated as Governor of Edo State in December following his election.

Similarly, the Anambra South seat has remained vacant since the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024.

INEC had previously stated in January 2025 that it was awaiting a formal request from the Senate before proceeding with the by-election for Anambra South.

Elizabeth Agu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Anambra State, reiterated this during a stakeholders’ dialogue organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) in Awka, the state capital.

With both senatorial districts currently lacking representation in the upper legislative chamber, Akpabio called on INEC to conduct the elections to restore proper representation for the affected constituencies.
