Former Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick, fell short in his attempt for re-election to the FIFA Council, losing by just one vote.
During the Confederation of African Football General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, Djibouti’s Souleiman Waberi claimed the final available seat with 29 votes, narrowly defeating Pinnick, who received 28 votes.
Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa led the election with 49 votes, while Egypt’s Hani Rida and Niger’s Djibrilla Hamidou each earned 35 votes. Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya and Waberi also secured their spots, each with 29 votes.
This result is a setback for Pinnick, who had been part of FIFA’s highest decision-making body since 2021 and was seeking to extend his term.
In the women’s election, Kanizat Ibrahim from Comoros won the seat with 30 votes, surpassing Lydia Nsekera (13 votes) and Isha Johansen (7 votes).
