Reps Clash Before Plenary Over Constitutionality Of Tinubu’s Decision To Declare State Of Emergency In Rivers

A heated argument erupted among members of the House of Representatives regarding the upcoming debate on the Rivers State emergency rule.

Two female lawmakers, Marie Ebikake (PDP, Bayelsa) and Blessing Amadi (PDP, Rivers), clashed over the constitutionality of President Tinubu’s declaration, shouting at each other before the start of the plenary session.

Other lawmakers intervened to prevent further escalation.

President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly for six months, and appointing retired Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as administrator.

House of Representatives spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, stated that President Tinubu had informed the National Assembly through a letter before the emergency proclamation, as required by Section 305 of the Constitution.

He added that the letter would be read during the plenary session on Wednesday for legislative action.

Rotimi also noted that Tinubu had consulted with the leadership of both chambers, the National Security Adviser, and Service Chiefs before his broadcast.
