The United States is addressing a severe egg shortage, caused by avian flu outbreaks, by importing eggs from Turkey and South Korea, as confirmed by Donald Trump’s agriculture secretary, Brooke Rollins.
Rollins stated that imports, numbering in the hundreds of millions, have commenced, and the White House is negotiating with other nations for temporary egg imports.
The bird flu outbreaks have led to the culling of at least 30 million birds, significantly reducing the US egg supply and causing prices to soar.
This issue became a focal point during Trump’s presidential campaign, as he highlighted rising living costs under the previous administration.
Upon returning to office, Trump directed Rollins to increase egg supply and lower prices. US diplomatic staff have approached poultry associations in Poland and Lithuania, among other countries, seeking egg imports.
The USDA has noted a nearly 50 percent decrease in wholesale egg prices since late February, indicating potential relief for consumers.
Rollins clarified that these imports are temporary and will cease once US poultry farmers can restore their production capacity.
