Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Founders Sunhak Peace Award, presented by the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation in Seoul, South Korea.
According to a statement from his Special Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Dr. Jonathan is the third person and the first African leader to receive this category of the Sunhak Award, following former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The 2025 Award Ceremony, the sixth edition of the event, will be held in Seoul on Friday, April 11, 2025, where Dr. Jonathan and other honorees will be recognized.
The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee highlighted that Dr. Jonathan was selected for his continuous peace mediation efforts and pro-democracy initiatives across Africa, particularly through his leadership roles in the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), and the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP).

The Sunhak Peace Prize includes two categories: the Founders Sunhak Peace Award and the Sunhak Peace Prize, both presented biennially to individuals and organizations making significant contributions to global peace and development.
Notable past recipients of the Sunhak Peace Prize include former Senegalese President Macky Sall, African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, Dame Sarah Catherine Gilbert—co-developer of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine—and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.
Dr. Jonathan will receive his award alongside three other winners in the Sunhak Peace Prize category, as announced by the committee chair and former European Commission President, José Manuel Durão Barroso.
The honorees include Patrick Awuah Jr., Founder and President of Ashesi University in Ghana; Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen; and Wanjira Mathai, Regional Director for Africa at the World Resources Institute.
Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, founder of the Sunhak Peace Prize and leader of an interfaith peace movement, praised the laureates in her pre-event address, stating that their lives exemplify how peace can be achieved through tangible efforts and cultural transformation.
She further emphasized that, over the past decade, the Sunhak Peace Prize has recognized individuals who have dedicated themselves to solving critical global issues based on three core values: human rights, conflict resolution, and ecological conservation.
Established in 2015, the Sunhak Peace Prize honors individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions to global peace and development in three areas: sustainable human development, conflict resolution, and environmental conservation.
