Numerous Facebook posts are circulating, alleging that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio, purportedly in connection with a sexual harassment scandal.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has reportedly placed Nigerian Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on an international sanctions list, ordering his immediate arrest if sighted in any country. A formal letter has also been sent to the Nigerian government, calling on President Bola Tinubu to take action.
The warrant follows allegations by a female senator who accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and forced kissing. She claims to have video evidence to support her claims, which the ICC has confirmed they have reviewed in full before issuing the arrest order.

On March 6, 2025, the Nigerian senate suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing the Kogi Central senatorial district, for six months.1 She is one of only four women in the 109-member senate.
The senate’s ethics committee recommended the suspension, citing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s refusal to accept a seating arrangement change and her argument with the senate president as misconduct.
The committee had previously dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition against Akpabio, stating that she did not adhere to procedural rules.
Akpoti-Uduaghan is currently challenging her suspension in court and has addressed the issue in various television interviews. She also raised the matter during the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting at the United Nations in New York City.
But has the International Criminal Court, which sits in The Hague in the Netherlands, issued an arrest warrant for Akpabio?
No evidence to support claim of ICC warrant of arrest
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an international tribunal that investigates and prosecutes individuals accused of the most serious international crimes, including genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression.
It is highly improbable that the ICC would involve itself in a domestic case concerning sexual harassment and a parliamentary suspension.
Africa Check verified the ICC’s records and found no cases related to the alleged scandal, nor any cases from Nigeria recorded in 2025.
Given the extensive coverage of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s senate suspension and the accusations against Akpabio within Nigeria, it is unlikely that an ICC intervention would go unnoticed by reputable media sources. No such reports were found.
Therefore, the claim of an ICC arrest warrant for Godswill Akpabio is unsubstantiated and false.
