Education Minister Proposes Two Years For NYSC

The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, has suggested increasing the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program duration from the current one year to two years.

Alausa also proposed enhancing the content of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training Programme offered to corps members.

He made these recommendations during a formal visit to the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, on Friday, as reported on the NYSC’s official Facebook page.

The post read, “The minister also advocated the extension of national service from one to two years, with the expansion of NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training programme content for corps members.”

Alausa also advocated for assigning a greater number of graduate teachers to schools in rural areas, stating that this would help alleviate the problem of insufficient staffing.

Furthermore, the minister addressed the matter of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) part-time graduates holding full-time Higher National Diplomas (HND), who had previously been exempt from the national service program, and discussed finding a resolution to this issue.

“You have done so well as an organisation. Let NYSC give people more opportunities to become job creators that will meet the needs of the country,” he said.

NYSC Director-General Nafiu suggested establishing a database for Nigerian students enrolled in degree programs overseas.

He explained that such a system would help the government and other stakeholders in the education sector to identify individuals presenting fraudulent academic credentials.

“NYSC is ready to comply with policy guidelines as directed by the Federal Government. We are also trying to reform the Scheme to conform with the present national needs,” he stated.
