FG Orders Federal Tertiary Institutions To Publicly Advertise Vacancies

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has instructed all Federal Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria to publicize any job openings through open channels.

This directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, as part of the Ministry’s renewed focus on fairness and integrity within the education sector.

According to a press statement released on Wednesday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the Minister stated that “All Federal Tertiary Institutions that have been granted permission to hire staff must advertise the available positions in at least one national newspaper, on their own websites, and in other relevant academic and professional publications.”

The Ministry explained that this action is intended to guarantee equal opportunities for all qualified Nigerians and to address the non-transparent hiring practices that have plagued the sector for years.

“This directive aims to ensure a transparent, open, and competitive recruitment process that offers equal opportunity to all eligible Nigerians,” the statement added.

The Ministry clarified that the permissions to hire were granted to tertiary institutions based on their specific staffing needs, following detailed submissions to the Ministry.

The statement reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to developing capacity within higher education institutions. Furthermore, institutions were reminded to submit their hiring needs to the Committee on Waiver and Recruitment for proper review.

The Ministry issued a warning that any institution failing to comply with this directive would face penalties. “The Ministry has established adequate mechanisms to ensure compliance and will not hesitate to apply sanctions against any institution that fails to adhere to this directive,” the statement noted.

Folasade emphasized the Ministry’s position, stating, “The Federal Ministry of Education remains firmly dedicated to promoting integrity and fairness in all matters related to the Nigerian higher education system.”
