Ndume Finally Reacts To Tinubu’s Declaration Of State Of Emergency In Rivers

Ali Ndume, the senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Nigeria’s security and economic sectors.

He made this appeal during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Daily” on Friday, where he also expressed disagreement with the President’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

“Let the President forget about everything and concentrate on three things – security, welfare of citizens and economy,” he stated.

“His attention should go there as number 1, then he should create a state of emergency in those areas.”

Senator Ali Ndume, identifying himself as a democrat, expressed surprise at President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

He criticized the President’s decision, made on March 18 in response to the ongoing political crisis in the state, calling it a misstep.

In a national broadcast, President Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the House of Assembly for six months, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as administrator to manage the state’s affairs during that period.

The President invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows for a state of emergency in situations of national danger, disaster, or terrorist attacks to restore control.

However, Senator Ndume argued that he expected the President to have convened the political figures involved to resolve their disputes, rather than resorting to a state of emergency.

He also refuted claims that the political actors had disregarded President Tinubu’s directives prior to the imposition of the emergency rule.

“I feel that the President would have worked seriously on bringing them (and) solving the problem than (declaring a state of emergency). Call them, seat them down and say ‘go and sort your problem.

“How can you ignore the President? When he removed them now, did they ignore the removal?” Ndume queried.
