US Court Orders FBI, Anti-Drug Agency To Release Tinubu’s Records

A U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. has directed major law enforcement agencies to disclose information concerning President Bola Tinubu.

Judge Beryl Howell issued the order on Tuesday in response to a motion filed by Aaron Greenspan, an American citizen challenging a previous ruling.

Greenspan accused the agencies of breaching the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by not releasing documents tied to alleged federal investigations involving Tinubu and Abiodun Agbele within the legally mandated time.

Judge Howell criticized the agencies’ justification for withholding the records, saying their argument that disclosing the information would be harmful was “neither logical nor plausible.”

She specifically rejected the “Glomar” responses used by the FBI and DEA, which are typically employed to neither confirm nor deny the existence of records.

The judge pointed out that both agencies had already acknowledged investigations involving Tinubu, undermining their refusal to release the documents.

She ruled that the Glomar responses were improperly applied and must be revoked.

Tinubu previously forfeited $460,000 to U.S. authorities in 1993 in a case tied to narcotics proceeds.

The matter resurfaced during Nigeria’s presidential election petition trial, where opponents Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi questioned his eligibility.

However, the court upheld Tinubu’s election.

Judge Howell’s latest ruling supports Greenspan’s argument that the public interest outweighs any privacy concerns and that previous disclosures by the agencies effectively waived their right to secrecy.
