Serbian President Admitted To Military Hospital On Return From US

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was hospitalized at a military hospital in Belgrade on Saturday upon his return from the United States, according to his office, which did not provide a specific reason for the admission.

Serbian media reported that Vucic cut short his trip, during which he was scheduled to meet the US President in Florida, after feeling unwell.

His office stated that he “was admitted to the Military Medical Academy immediately after landing” in Belgrade and that more details about his health would be released “in good time.”

National Serbian broadcaster RTS reported that Vucic was originally planning to meet the US President but shortened his trip after feeling unwell and consulting a doctor.

His hospitalization occurs while the Serbian leader is facing significant protests in Serbia related to a fatal train station accident in Novi Sad.

Vucic had also been hospitalized in 2019 due to heart problems.

This announcement raises questions about Vucic’s planned visit to Russia, Serbia’s traditional ally, for the 80th-anniversary celebrations of the end of World War II on May 9.

On Thursday, Vucic had pledged to keep his promise to Vladimir Putin and join around 20 other world leaders for the event, which includes a large military parade in Red Square.

However, a visit to Putin could potentially anger the European Union, which Serbia aspires to join. Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his country would not be responsible for the safety of foreign leaders in Russia.
