The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing that a significant majority of candidates, over 1.5 million out of 1.95 million (78.5%), scored below 200 out of a possible 400.
JAMB’s data, posted on their official X account on Monday, showed that out of the 1,955,069 candidates who took the exam, only a small fraction achieved high scores: 4,756 candidates (0.24%) scored 320 and above, and 7,658 candidates (0.39%) scored between 300 and 319, totaling just 12,414 candidates (0.63%) with scores of 300 or higher.
Further breakdown of the results indicated that 73,441 candidates (3.76%) scored between 250 and 299, while 334,560 candidates (17.11%) scored between 200 and 249.
The largest group, 983,187 candidates (50.29%), scored between 160 and 199.
Additionally, 488,197 candidates (24.97%) scored between 140 and 159, 57,419 candidates (2.94%) scored between 120 and 139, 3,820 candidates (0.20%) scored between 100 and 119, and 2,031 candidates (0.10%) scored below 100.
JAMB also disclosed that 40,247 underage candidates with “exceptional abilities” were allowed to take the exam, but only 467 of them (1.16%) met the threshold for “exceptional ability” and will undergo further evaluation.
The board reported 97 cases of examination infractions and 2,157 instances of suspected malpractices are currently under investigation.
71,701 candidates were absent, and those with biometric issues are being investigated for rescheduling. Results for blind candidates and those in the JEOG category are still being processed.
JAMB assured fair treatment for candidates with challenges, with rescheduling for those cleared, and announced a press briefing later in the week to detail result checking procedures and address public concerns.
The 2025 results show a similar trend to 2024, where a large percentage of candidates also scored below 200.
In 2024, out of over 1.9 million candidates, only 0.4% scored above 300, 24% scored 200 or higher, and 76% scored below 200.
The 2024 exam also saw a higher number of female candidates than male candidates for the first time in three years, and an increase in the registration of persons living with disabilities.
