Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated on Tuesday that Israel’s victory in its war against Hamas would result in the “entirely destroyed” Gaza Strip.
Speaking at a conference in the Israeli settlement of Ofra in the occupied West Bank, Smotrich outlined a scenario where “Gaza will be entirely destroyed, civilians will be sent to… the south to a humanitarian zone without Hamas or terrorism, and from there they will start to leave in great numbers to third countries.”
Smotrich, who resides in a West Bank settlement, also expressed his hope for the formal annexation of the Gaza Strip during the current government’s tenure, which could extend until late the following year.
He described the annexation of the West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, as “one of the most important challenges” for the Israeli leadership.
In recent months, Israeli public figures, including Smotrich, have increasingly advocated for the annexation of the West Bank, despite international concerns regarding the Palestinian territory’s future.
The West Bank, excluding Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem, is home to three million Palestinians and approximately 490,000 Israelis living in settlements considered illegal under international law.
