Real Reason For Low Scores In 2025 UTME – Minister

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has attributed the low performance in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results to the enhanced integrity and security measures implemented during the exam process.

Speaking on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” on Tuesday, Alausa explained that the results reflect a system where cheating has been significantly reduced.

He suggested that the results from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) should be viewed as a realistic assessment of students’ academic preparedness under stringent examination conditions, rather than a national failure.

“JAMB conducts its exams using computer-based testing. They put so much security in place that cheating has been completely eliminated,” he stated.

He contrasted this with other national examinations, like those conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO), where similar anti-cheating measures are not yet fully implemented.

This disparity, he argued, leads to an inaccurate evaluation of students’ abilities, particularly when those who may have cheated in secondary school exams face the rigorous standards of JAMB.

“In WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and other exam bodies, we still see malpractices due to manual processes and what we call ‘miracle centres’. That has to stop,” Alausa emphasized.

He revealed that the ministry had initiated a comprehensive review of the national examination process shortly after he assumed office and had formed a committee to recommend reforms.

He indicated that the committee is expected to submit its findings in the coming days.
