The Ogun State Government has appointed Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami as its inaugural Grand Sports Ambassador, a significant step towards advancing sports development in the state.
Governor Dapo Abiodun made the announcement during a press briefing with sports journalists in Abeokuta on Tuesday. Odegbami, widely known as “Mathematical” for his exceptional football intelligence and skill, was chosen in recognition of his extensive contributions to Nigerian sports and his strong ties to Ogun State.
Governor Abiodun emphasized that this carefully considered decision aims to utilize Odegbami’s experience and passion to inspire young athletes and promote sporting excellence throughout the state.
Ogun State already boasts sports ambassadors like world champion hurdler Tobi Amusan and two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
However, Odegbami’s appointment to Grand Sports Ambassador signifies a new level of engagement and leadership in sports promotion.
In his acceptance speech, Odegbami expressed his gratitude to the Governor and the people of Ogun State.
He acknowledged the unique nature of the title, stating, “I’ve not read or heard it before, that title of Grand Sports Ambassador. I think this is the very first of its kind anywhere. I want to thank His Excellency for his creativity in creating this position.”
He pledged to fulfill his responsibilities with humility and dedication.
Segun Odegbami is celebrated as one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, earning his “Mathematical” nickname due to both his football intellect and his engineering background.
He played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980 and was renowned for his skillful play on the right wing.
Beyond his playing career, Odegbami has remained influential in Nigerian sports as a mentor, broadcaster, and advocate for sports development, consistently supporting grassroots programmes and youth empowerment through sports.
In his new role, Odegbami is expected to collaborate closely with the state government to develop sustainable sports initiatives, foster talent identification and growth, and elevate Ogun State’s standing as a leading force in Nigerian sports.
