Gunmen, believed to be armed herders, attacked Mbatsada communities in the Mbalom and Mbasombo council wards of Gwer East Local Government Area in Benue State on Tuesday evening, killing an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Akaabo Johnson, and three other individuals.
According to local sources, the suspected armed herders invaded the communities around 4:35 pm on Tuesday in a coordinated manner, shooting randomly and fatally wounding four people.
The Chairman of Gwer-East LGA, Timothy Adi, confirmed the incident via telephone on Wednesday, describing the attack as unprovoked and the second such incident in the area within the past two weeks.

He stated that security personnel have been deployed to the local government’s boundary lines to prevent further attacks.
Adi reported that “Four dead bodies among them an APC elder in the ward were recovered and their bodies taken to St. Gregory Hospital morgue.”
He urged residents, particularly the youth, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies, emphasizing unity and steadfastness in the face of this tragedy.
He also conveyed that Governor Alia is actively working on plans to end these unprovoked attacks.
The chairman commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his swift response and support, which facilitated the rapid deployment of security forces to manage the situation.
