According to Comrade Waiya, this ban is not intended to stifle political views but is a strategic measure to prevent the broadcast of inflammatory or defamatory content that could disrupt the peace and moral values of the state.
“We are not out to gag the media or suppress political opposition,” the Commissioner clarified. “Our concern is to uphold responsible communication that aligns with the cultural and religious sensitivities of Kano State.”
Comrade Waiya noted a positive change in media conduct, stating that “the reduction in abusive language on air is commendable and a direct result of our previous engagements with media professionals.”
A key agreement from the meeting was that all guests on broadcast platforms must sign a commitment to avoid abusive or culturally offensive remarks. Presenters were also warned against asking leading questions or making gestures that could provoke defamatory responses.
“This is a collective effort to preserve the integrity of our media and ensure the dignity of the state is not compromised,” the Commissioner added.
Media executives present expressed their support for the government’s initiative and pledged to collaborate to improve broadcast standards.
They also offered suggestions to further sanitize the industry and encourage peaceful discussion.
The Commissioner also mentioned ongoing awareness programs for political presenters, commentators, and religious leaders, especially Friday Imams, to encourage constructive and respectful public dialogue.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment between the media and the government to promote ethical journalism and protect the state’s values.
