The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has taken responsibility for the widespread poor performance observed in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
At a press briefing on Wednesday, a visibly emotional JAMB registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, acknowledged the unfortunate situation.

He announced that approximately 379,997 candidates who participated in the recently concluded 2025 examination would be given the opportunity to retake it.
This decision comes after numerous complaints regarding technical issues, unexpectedly low scores, and alleged irregularities during the UTME.
Professor Oloyede, who was tearful and repeatedly used a handkerchief, stated that he accepted full accountability for the errors made by the board’s staff.
He disclosed that candidates who sat for the exam in 65 centers in Lagos and 92 centers in the Owerri Zone, which includes the five states in the South East region, would be required to rewrite the examination.
