Edo Deputy Speaker Resigns

The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, has stepped down from her position.

Mrs. Oligbi-Edeko announced her resignation during a plenary session in Benin City, the state capital, on Monday.

Her resignation, representing Esan North-East II constituency, comes after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost its majority in the Assembly due to the defection of several members, including the Speaker, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Hon. Oligbi-Edeko was elected Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly on June 16, 2023, and served until her resignation.

Following her departure, Mr. Osamwonyi Atu (APC, Orhionmwon East) was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan, proposed a motion to ensure that Mrs. Oligbi-Edeko receives all entitlements associated with the office of the Deputy Speaker.

This motion was supported by the Minority Leader, Hon Charity Airobarueghian, and was unanimously approved by the House through a voice vote.

In her resignation letter submitted to the House, Mrs. Oligbi-Edeko stated that her decision was made “to allow justice, fairness, and equity for all the constituencies.”

She expressed gratitude to the leaders and members of the PDP for entrusting her with the opportunity to represent her constituency in the Assembly.

Lawmakers commended Mrs. Oligbi-Edeko for her “unwavering dedication and passion for public service.”
