The Lagos State Government has announced that the full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics will commence on July 1, 2025.

According to the Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, this decision follows an 18-month period of dialogue, engagement, and transition with stakeholders, including marketers and producers.

Wahab emphasized that this move aligns with global best practices, stating that standards unacceptable elsewhere cannot be the norm in Lagos. He reiterated this stance during a meeting with the management of TETRA PAK West Africa Limited.

The Commissioner stressed that this is about environmental responsibility and protecting the future of Lagos.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to accountability and responsibility, similar to the successful enforcement of the Styrofoam ban initiated in January 2024.

In September 2024, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) destroyed ₦5 million worth of seized Styrofoam, signaling a zero-tolerance policy.

It’s worth noting that in June 2024, the Federal Government also announced a ban on single-use plastics in its ministries, departments, and agencies, aligning with the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management, which aims to ban certain single-use plastics nationwide by January 2025.

The Minister of State for Environment highlighted the detrimental effects of plastic waste on drainage, flooding, oceans, and overall health and the environment.
