Court Sentences Former PDP Chairman’s Son To 14-Year Jail Term For N2.2bn Oil Subsidy Fraud

On Tuesday, Justice Mojisola Dada of the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja sentenced Mamman Nasir Ali, son of former PDP National Chairman Ahmadu Ali, and a Sierra Leonean, Christian Taylor, to 14 years in prison each for their involvement in a N2.2 billion oil subsidy fraud.

The judge also convicted their company, Nasaman Oil Services Limited, after finding them guilty on an amended 57-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The case, initially filed in 2012 with 49 counts, accused the defendants of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences, forgery, and using false documents—offences under the Advance Fee Fraud Act of 2006 and the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2011.

EFCC prosecutor Seiduh Atteh alleged that on or about September 9, 2011, the defendants fraudulently collected N2.2 billion from the federal government through the petroleum subsidy scheme using forged documents, including a falsified gasoline analysis report supposedly issued by Saybolt Concremat for MT Overseas Limar.

Justice Dada, in her ruling, said the prosecution had presented convincing evidence and condemned the convicts’ actions as not only defrauding the government but also damaging the credibility of the fuel subsidy programme.

In addition to the prison sentences, the court ordered the confiscation of assets and bank accounts tied to the fraud.

The judge also issued arrest warrants for two other suspects still at large: Oluwaseun Ogunbambo and Olabisi Abdul Afeez.
