The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Akwa Ibom State University branch, has begun an indefinite strike.
This action stems from a long-standing dispute over salaries, allowances, and the implementation of the N80,000 minimum wage.
Dr. Frank Namso, chairman of the ASUU Akwa Ibom State University chapter, announced the strike during a press briefing at the university’s Obio Akpa Campus on Tuesday.

He explained that the union had repeatedly attempted to engage with both the institution’s management and the state government without success.
Namso stated that the union’s congress unanimously voted to begin an indefinite strike starting from midnight on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, until their demands are met.
This decision aligns with a resolution from ASUU’s recent national delegates conference, which permits branches to strike if salaries aren’t paid by the third of a new month.
The core issues in contention include:
- Non-payment of Domestic Servant and Drivers Allowance
- Non-payment of the N80,000 minimum wage and its arrears
- Inadequate allocation of percentages to peculiar allowances
- Fraudulent payment of N2,000 for hazard allowance
- Non-implementation of 35% and 25% wage awards
- Delays in national promotions payment
- Non-payment for Post-Graduate Lectures/Supervision
The chairman lamented that academic staff at the university have been denied domestic staff and driver’s allowances for 13 years, while non-teaching staff have received these benefits.
He described this disparity as “disheartening” and in need of a comprehensive review. Namso highlighted that lecturers in other state-owned institutions within Akwa Ibom (Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Akwa Ibom State College of Education, and Akwa Ibom State College of Arts and Science, Nung Ukim) have enjoyed these allowances for over a decade.
