Several northern Nigerian states, including Kano, Gombe, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Yobe, and Nasarawa, have announced school closures for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, with holiday durations varying by state.
In Kano, all public and private primary and secondary schools will begin their break on Wednesday, June 4. Boarding students are slated to return on Sunday, June 16, while day students will resume on Monday, June 17.The state Ministry of Education, through its Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, advised parents to pick up their children from boarding schools early on Wednesday and confirmed that the Eid break does not affect the 2024/2025 academic calendar.
Gombe State schools will close on Thursday, June 5, and reopen on Tuesday, June 10, aligning with the Federal Government’s public holiday declaration, as confirmed by Saidu Malala of the state’s Ministry of Education.

Similarly, Katsina State has declared a seven-day Sallah break for all schools, running from Wednesday, June 4, to Wednesday, June 11. This directive, issued by Director of Schools, Kabir Dodo, applies to all public, private, and community schools.
Kebbi State also approved a Sallah holiday starting today, with schools expected to resume on Sunday, June 15. The ministry, via a circular signed by Director of Quality Assurance, Abubakar Jabbo, urged parents to ensure their wards return promptly.
In Sokoto, while an official circular is pending, most private schools have already begun their break. The state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is expected to issue a circular by Wednesday, with schools likely closing from Thursday and most resuming on June 16. The ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Iya Moi, indicated a “strong indication that schools will close starting Thursday.”
Bauchi State, however, will strictly adhere to the Federal Government’s two-day public holiday, with no additional school break for Eid-el-Kabir. The ministry’s Information Officer, Jalaluddeen Usman, confirmed that school activities would resume immediately after the federal holidays.
Lastly, Yobe State’s Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education announced a break from Wednesday, June 4, to Saturday, June 14, encompassing both Sallah and Democracy Day holidays. Academic activities are set to resume on Sunday, June 15. Director of Schools Management, Bukar Modu, explained that this break includes the observance of June 12 Democracy Day, in line with the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs’ declaration. Both public and private schools across Yobe’s 13 local government areas have already notified students of the break.
