What Played Significant Role In Nigerian Civil War – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo stated on Wednesday in Abuja that disinformation played a significant role in the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970).

Speaking at the Sixth Annual Nigerian Civil War Symposium, organized by the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN), Obasanjo emphasized the relevance of the symposium’s theme, “The Role of Disinformation in the Nigerian Civil War,” particularly in the current era of asymmetric warfare.

He explained that disinformation, propaganda, psychological warfare, and the spread of false narratives are tactics employed by a weaker force to discredit a stronger one in asymmetric conflicts.

“Disinformation played a significant role in the Nigerian Civil War, exacerbating tensions and influencing public opinion.

“The same strategy is currently being employed by the insurgents in North East and other violent groups in other parts of Nigeria.

“In line with the theme, the Symposium will therefore highlight the importance of media and information operations in conflict resolution and nation-building,’’ he said.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized the importance of deliberate and diligent study of history, especially military history, for Nigeria to extract and apply valuable lessons.

Quoting the saying, “a child that does not learn history will be told history,” he stressed that understanding the past is crucial for navigating the present and building a more equitable future for all Nigerians.

Obasanjo commended the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) for incorporating the study of the Nigerian Civil War into its curriculum, which he believes enhances the ability of operational leaders to apply historical lessons to contemporary planning.

“This fratricide conflict left an indelible mark on our nation’s collective memory and continues to shape our identity.

“The war’s complex causes, consequences and lessons offer valuable insights for us all,” he added.
