Russia Vs Nigeria Full Time Match Report

Nigeria’s Super Eagles came from behind to secure a draw in their first-ever senior international match against Russia.

The team, fresh off winning the Unity Cup in west London, showed confidence despite the absence of key players like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, and Ola Aina.

These absences provided an opportunity for new talents such as Victor Boniface and Christantus Uche to impress.

However, it was Tolu Arokodare who truly seized the moment, staking a strong claim for a starting spot in the crucial upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

For Valery Karpin’s Football Union of Russia, suspended by FIFA and UEFA since October 2022, this draw marks their first failure to win in eight games, a run that had extended since October 2023.

The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark, somewhat against the run of play, through a fortuitous but sublimely created goal.

Danil Krugovoy’s teasing cross from left-back, intended for Nikolay Komlichenko, was ultimately turned into his own net by Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi.

This was a reversal of fortune for Ajayi, who had forced an own goal in Nigeria’s favor during their Unity Cup semi-final win against Ghana just a week prior.

Despite not creating many clear chances around the goal, the Super Eagles were unlucky to be trailing at halftime.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was denied a clear equalizer by a superb save from Paris Saint-Germain’s backup goalkeeper, Matvey Sofonov, who showed no signs of a Champions League final hangover.

Russia should have doubled their lead early in the second half when Viktor Melekhin, unmarked after a free-kick, inexplicably side-footed his effort high and wide with only Maduka Okoye to beat.

This miss proved costly, as Nigerian substitute Arokodare capitalized on a rare mistake from Safonov, pouncing on the error to equalize and showcasing a performance reminiscent of Osimhen.

Although Russia had the better chances to win the game, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made two crucial saves, including a full-stretch stop to deny Aleksey Batrakov’s shot heading for the bottom corner.

Dmitri Barinov also blazed an effort over the bar right at the end, securing the draw for Nigeria.
