Ambassador Ibironke Adefope, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to Zambia and Malawi and a respected member of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, has died at the age of 73.
Born on February 23, 1952, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Adefope led a distinguished life characterized by academic achievement, diplomatic service, and dedication to community development.
Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, expressed profound sorrow over her passing, describing her as an “Amazon” and “icon” who left indelible marks.

In a condolence message signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Governor Makinde stated, “The news of the death of our Mama, Ambassador Ibironke Adefope, a former Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Zambia and a member of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, came to me as a rude shock.”
He added, “However, we must submit to the will of God, who gives and takes life.”
Makinde praised Ambassador Adefope’s service and legacy, noting her lineage from the illustrious Eegunjenmi family of Itutaba, Oje, Ibadan, and her descent from Chief Meredith Adisa Akinloye, a prominent political figure and her grandfather.
The governor remarked, “Mama was a great Amazon and an icon, who made immense contributions to the development and progress of Oyo State as well as Nigeria. She sustained the great legacy she inherited and also made her own marks on the sands of time.”
Makinde concluded that she will be greatly missed for her support, advice, and commitment to the state, adding, “May the Lord console everyone she left behind.”
Ambassador Adefope’s education began at St. Anne’s School, Molete, Ibadan, followed by A-Levels at the International School of the University of Ibadan (ISI).
She then pursued her first and second degrees in the United States and was later awarded an honorary doctorate by Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.
