States To Experience 3-Day Thunderstorm, Rain From Wednesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rain across the country from Wednesday to Friday.

Wednesday, June 11

NiMet’s outlook, released Tuesday, anticipates early morning thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, and Adamawa in the North. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are expected over parts of Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.

In the North Central region, early morning thunderstorms are likely in parts of Benue, Kwara, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa. Thunderstorms with rain are then expected later in the day over parts of the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau.

The Southern region will see a cloudy morning with chances of rain over parts of Ondo, Ekiti, and Edo. Isolated thunderstorms with rain are anticipated later in the day over parts of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers during the afternoon or evening.

Thursday, June 12

NiMet foresees morning thunderstorms over parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, and Taraba in the North. Later, thunderstorms with rain are expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, Gombe, and Bauchi.

The North Central region will have patches of clouds with sunshine, but early morning thunderstorms are possible in parts of Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are anticipated over parts of the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau.

In the Southern region, morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Isolated thunderstorms with rain are then likely over most parts of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers later in the day.

Friday, June 13

Morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba in the Northern region. Later, thunderstorms with rain are anticipated over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Kaduna, and Bauchi.

The North Central region will experience patches of clouds with sunshine, with prospects of thunderstorms and rain over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Niger. Thunderstorms are also forecast over parts of Kwara, Benue, and Kogi in the afternoon or evening.

In the Southern region, a cloudy atmosphere is expected with chances of morning rain over parts of Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Isolated thunderstorms with rain are predicted over most parts of the region later in the day.

Public Safety Advisory

NiMet warns that strong winds may precede the rains where thunderstorms are likely. The public should take adequate precautions and ensure loose objects are fastened to avoid collision. Driving during heavy rain should be avoided, and electrical appliances should be disconnected from sockets. People should also stay away from tall trees to prevent impact from falling or broken branches.

Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective operational planning.
