The Israeli military has launched multiple airstrikes targeting nuclear facilities and military sites across Iran, resulting in the deaths of senior Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists.
In a prerecorded video message released early Friday morning, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes, dubbed “Nation of Lions,” were intended to damage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and ballistic missile factories.
He declared, “This operation will take as long as is needed to complete the task of fending off the threat of annihilation against us.”
The Israeli military confirmed to The Times of Israel that it had “launched an aerial campaign against Iran’s nuclear programme.” Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir asserted that Iran’s nuclear program had reached a “point of no return,” and Israel could not “wait for another moment to act” in its “fight to preserve our existence.”
An unnamed Israeli military official informed reporters that fighter jets conducted five waves of attacks, totaling hundreds of strikes.
Israeli strikes have been confirmed in at least eight locations across Iran, including the capital Tehran, the main uranium enrichment site in Natanz, and a nuclear research center in Tabriz.
Iranian state media has reported several casualties, including both civilians and senior officials. Confirmed deaths include Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps; Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s Armed Forces; and nuclear scientists Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoun Abbasi.
Following the attacks, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel to prepare for a “bitter and painful fate.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry declared Tehran’s “legal and legitimate” right to respond and vowed to involve the U.S., claiming Israel’s strikes could not have occurred without American “coordination and authorization.”
