Peter Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper and a member of the victorious 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, has passed away.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed Rufai’s death on Thursday via a post on its official X handle.
The NFF’s tribute read: “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Known affectionately as “Dodo Mayana,” Rufai was a significant figure in Nigerian football, earning 65 appearances for the national team.
He was part of the iconic “golden generation” that secured Nigeria’s second AFCON title in Tunisia in 1994.
Additionally, he proudly represented the country in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, in 1994 and 1998.
