Senator Natasha Fined ₦5m For Contempt

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fined Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, ₦5 million for contempt of court.

On Friday, Justice Binta Nyako found the lawmaker in contempt due to a satirical apology she published on her Facebook page on April 27, 2025, directed at Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The contempt ruling was delivered by Justice Nyako as she began hearing a separate suit filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan challenging her suspension from the Senate.

Senate President Akpabio had filed the contempt application, arguing that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s social media post violated a prior court order which prohibited all parties involved in the case from making public comments to the media or on social media.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal counsel contended that her Facebook post was unrelated to the court’s suspension order, asserting it referred instead to separate allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio.

However, Justice Nyako disagreed, concluding after reviewing the post and Akpabio’s application that the content was indeed linked to the ongoing suspension matter. Consequently, she found Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt.

As part of the judgment, the judge ordered Akpoti-Uduaghan to publish an apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page within seven days, in addition to imposing the ₦5 million fine.
