Ancelotti Sentenced To One-Year In Prison For Tax Fraud Committed In 2014

A Spanish court has handed down a one-year prison sentence to former Real Madrid manager and current Brazil coach, Carlo Ancelotti, for tax fraud committed in 2014.

However, due to Spanish law regarding sentences under two years for non-violent crimes and Ancelotti’s lack of a criminal record, he will not be required to serve any jail time.

Prosecutors had accused the 66-year-old Italian, one of football’s most successful managers, of using a system of shell companies to conceal over one million euros in undeclared earnings, particularly from image rights, during his initial tenure as Real Madrid manager in 2014 and 2015.

They had initially sought a sentence of four years and nine months.

Ancelotti, who no longer resides in Spain, denied intentionally committing fraud during his trial in April.

He claimed he was unaware that a scheme allowing him to receive part of his salary through image rights would result in lower tax payments.

A Madrid court’s ruling on Wednesday convicted Ancelotti for an “offence against the treasury” and imposed a fine of 386,361 euros.

The court, however, acquitted him of the fraud allegation for the 2015 tax year.
