The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has welcomed the opposition coalition’s adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform, viewing it as a positive development for democracy that will prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.
Gbajabiamila shared his thoughts with journalists on Saturday after casting his vote in the Lagos State local government elections in Surulere.
He commented, “It’s a welcome development with the coalition. It’s not the first time we’re seeing this… In every democracy, we must have some level of opposition otherwise we’ll run into a one-party state. But I’m not sure where it would go.”

Earlier this month, prominent opposition leaders convened at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where they formally designated the ADC as their unified platform to contest the ruling APC in the 2027 general elections.
During the event, Ralph Nwosu handed over ADC membership cards to David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, who were introduced as the interim national chairman and national secretary of the coalition, respectively.
The meeting was attended by several influential political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, and other stakeholders such as Dino Melaye, Dele Momodu, Solomon Dalung, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
The gathering also saw participation from various politicians belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
