The Nigeria Police Force has released activist and politician Omoyele Sowore after detaining him for about three days. Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), announced his release on his verified social media handles late Friday.
He wrote, “Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movt, I have been released from unjust, illegal & unwarranted detention. However, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank u for not giving up!#RevolutionNow.”
The release came after the Commissioner of Police for the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, explained the reasons for Sowore’s continued detention.

In a video streamed by Sowore’s SaharaReporters, the CP stated, “The two petitions against Omoyele Sowore were shown to him right in my presence.”
He further detailed that one petition bordered on the “forgery of a police document,” while the other had to do with “cyberbullying.”
Shogunle clarified that Sowore’s prolonged stay in custody was due to his alleged refusal to make a statement, even in the presence of his lawyers.
The CP insisted that the police were following due process, noting, “He has the right to remain silent, and the police also have the duties and responsibilities under the law to follow certain procedures once a suspect decides to keep mute. We won’t say because you have decided to keep mute, you can go, no.”
Sowore was initially detained after voluntarily honoring a police invitation on Wednesday. His detention had sparked protests from his supporters in various states across the country.
