Britain’s minister for homelessness, Rushanara Ali, has resigned from the government after reports revealed she had considerably raised the rent on a property she owns.
In her resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Ali stated that her decision was made “with a heavy heart.”
Her resignation followed a report by the I-Paper daily, which alleged that she gave four tenants four months’ notice to vacate a London house, only to re-lease it a few weeks later with the rent hiked by more than £700.
The revelation led to calls for her resignation from various anti-homelessness associations and opposition lawmakers.
In her letter, which was released by the prime minister’s office, Ali insisted that she had “followed all relevant legal requirements” and took her “responsibilities and duties seriously.”
She added, however, that her continued presence in the role would be “a distraction from the ambitious work of the government.”
Prime Minister Starmer accepted her resignation, thanking her for her “diligent work” and acknowledging the significant impact of her efforts to repeal the Vagrancy Act.
