El-Rufai Sends Strong Message Concerning One-Term Pledges To Obi, Amaechi

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has advised former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi to stop making “one-term presidency pledges,” saying Nigerians do not believe such promises.

Speaking on “Channels Television’s Sunday Politics,” El-Rufai dismissed the idea, stating that as former governors, both men should know that “four years is not enough” to deliver “meaningful reforms.”

El-Rufai said, “Now, on the question of people coming out and saying, I will do one term, I don’t think anyone believes that.”

He added, “You should not constitutionally give up what is yours. And frankly, as someone who has been governor for eight years, and Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful change in government. Four years is not enough.”

He also claimed that politicians who make these pledges often change their minds, and for that reason, he appealed to them to “stop making these commitments of ‘I will do four years’ or ‘I will do eight years’, because nobody believes you.”

The former governor also explained that his support for a “power shift to the South” in the 2023 election was a “political strategy” based on a prior agreement among leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the party’s formation.

He revealed that he mobilized northern governors to back the decision and stated that “zoning remains a political strategy” used by parties to win elections.
