FG Reacts As Finnish Court Sentences Simon Ekpa To Six Years In Prison For Terrorism

The Nigerian Federal Government has called the conviction of Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court “a major victory” in the fight against terrorism.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reacted to the sentencing on X, stating, “We welcome the news of Simon Ekpa’s conviction by a Finnish court for terrorism-related crimes and his sentencing to six years in prison. A major victory for the Nigerian people in the collective fight against terror.”

A Finnish court, the Päijät-Häme District Court, sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison for “terrorism-related crimes.”

The unanimous verdict from a three-judge panel found Ekpa guilty of “participating in the activities of a terrorist group” and “inciting the public to commit crimes for terrorist purposes.”

He was also convicted of “aggravated tax fraud and violating the Lawyers Act.”

According to the ruling, Ekpa was an “influential member of a militant separatist movement” and used his social media presence to “incite violence” and encourage his followers to “commit crimes” in Nigeria.

The court also found that he supplied these groups with “weapons, explosives, and ammunition.”

Ekpa, a long-term resident of Lahti, Finland, had denied all charges. H

owever, the verdict is not yet final, as it can be appealed to a higher court.
