2026 World Cup Qualifiers: FIFA Makes Clarification Concerning Qualification In Group C Ahead Of South Africa, Nigeria Match

World football governing body FIFA has released an official update just hours before the much-anticipated World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Nigeria on Tuesday, explaining the qualification scenarios in Africa’s Group C.

South Africa currently lead the group with 16 points, six ahead of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who have only managed two wins in seven games to reach 10 points.

Benin Republic are still in contention with 11 points as they prepare to face Lesotho in Abidjan, making Tuesday’s matches potentially decisive.

In its statement on X, FIFA said: “Two more teams could secure @fifaworldcup 26 qualification today. Egypt will qualify if they beat Burkina Faso, while South Africa will qualify if they beat Nigeria, and Benin fail to beat Lesotho.”

The announcement has reignited debate among supporters, especially over the unresolved disciplinary issue involving South Africa.

Bafana Bafana risked a three-point and three-goal deduction for allegedly using an ineligible player against Lesotho in March.

While ESPN had previously highlighted the possible sanction, FIFA has not yet given a verdict.

Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr criticized the silence from football authorities.

“FIFA and CAF have failed to act on a disciplinary case involving South Africa fielding an ineligible player,” Rohr said, expressing frustration at what he described as an unexplained delay.

As a result, Group C remains on a knife edge. Victory for South Africa against Nigeria could book their spot at the 2026 World Cup if Benin do not overcome Lesotho.

However, if sanctions are eventually applied, the standings could change dramatically, keeping all three teams in contention.
