FG Announces Condition For Schools To Retain WAEC Accreditation

The Federal Government has “insisted that secondary schools must ensure their teachers have the proper certification,” or “the schools will no longer be allowed to serve as examination centres.”

The directive was issued in a memo from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to “strengthen professionalism in the teaching profession.”

Alausa stated that beginning in 2027, the accreditation of secondary schools for public examinations would be strictly tied to TRCN certification.

He said, “Accordingly, effective from March 2027 for WASSCE, May 2027 for NABTEB, June 2027 for NECO and June 2027 for SAISSCE, any school whose teachers are not duly registered and licensed with the TRCN shall be disqualified from serving as an examination centre.”

The minister also requested state governments to ensure compliance, with a minimum compliance rate of “75 per cent by 2026 and full compliance of 100 per cent by 2027,” stating, “Compliance with this directive shall be monitored, with schools expected to achieve a minimum compliance rate of 75 per cent by 2026 and full compliance of 100 per cent by 2027.”

To ease compliance, “non-education graduates” with at least 12 months of teaching experience are urged to enroll in the National Teachers Institute for an “abridged professional certification programme” consisting of “short professional courses,” after which they can qualify for TRCN registration.

The minister urged stakeholders to give the directive the highest priority to avoid “disruption of accreditation for public examinations.”
