State That Has Never Celebrated Nigeria’s Independence Day

Since its creation in 1996, Zamfara State has “never, in the history of the State, celebrated Nigeria’s Independence Day,” raising questions as to why the State has not been celebrating the national holiday even though it is part of Nigeria.

Students from various institutions expressed dismay over the State government’s handling of the Independence Day celebration.

Abdulahi Usman, a student of Zamfara State College of Art and Science (ZACAS), noted that the present Governor Dauda Lawal is “very much educated, but he borrowed the leave from the past Governors of the State.”

Usman added, “Zamfara State is acting as if it is not part of Nigeria. The federal government will declare 1st October as a public holiday, but Zamfara civil servants will not enjoy it. Why should the state government agree with the public holiday?”

Fatima Aliyu from the Federal College of Education, Technical, Gusau, said the situation needed to be addressed tactically because “we are as if we are foreigners in our own country,” she lamented.

Similarly, Anas Babangida of the Federal University Gusau “expressed dismay,” stating, “Nobody can run away from reality, and the reality is that Zamfara State is still part of Nigeria,” she lamented.

Babangida appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal to embrace the national Day celebration as a priority, stressing that the State “cannot be left alone in the national struggle.”
