A total of eight people, which included a lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and a relative of Nnamdi Kanu, Fineboy Kanu, were arrested during yesterday’s #FreeNnamadiKanuNow protest in sections of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin verified the arrests of the demonstrators, confirming that “Once we conclude investigations, they will be prosecuted.”
He added that the arrested individuals “are currently at the state CID.”

Hundeyin also addressed rumors that security personnel had used live bullets on the protesters, explicitly dispelling the speculation.
He stated, “I can state categorically, authoritatively, that no live ammunition was fired.”
He further clarified that people who are unfamiliar with the sounds can mistake the firing of tear gas for live ammunition, which the police deployed in line with Standard Operating Practice (SOP)Â to break up demonstrators who tried to enter areas restricted by a court order.

The police action, according to Hundeyin, was taken because they had intelligence reports indicating that the protest could degenerate into violence.
He defended the police’s restriction, arguing that a Federal High Court order prevented protesters from accessing certain parts of the FCT and key national institutions.
Recalling a previous incident, Hundeyin stated, “There was a group that protested along this road some years back, and it was anarchy. We saw ambulances burnt down. We cannot allow that to happen again.”
