Police Reveals Why Sowore Was Arrested, Says He Will Be Charged To Court Today

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested human rights activist and the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore was reportedly arrested on Thursday by “armed policemen within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja,” shortly after showing solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to Channels Television, stating that the activist is currently “in police custody and will be charged to court today.”

Hundeyin explained that Sowore was arrested for allegedly “violating a court order that prohibits protests around the Three Arms Zone in Abuja.”

This arrest follows the ‘#FreeNnamdiKanu protest’ Sowore led in Abuja on Monday to demand the IPOB leader’s release.

During that protest, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, his brother, Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others were arrested and remanded at Kuje Prison.

A Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, subsequently ordered their remand on Tuesday.

The Nigeria Police charged Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu, and the ten others with a “two-count offence of inciting public disturbance and breach of peace.”

The charge sheet alleges the suspects obstructed traffic flow, denied citizens their “right to free movement,” and “chanted war songs” while demanding Kanu’s release.

Sowore himself had previously accused security operatives of launching an “unprovoked attack on peaceful protesters” during Monday’s rally.

Speaking on the Monday edition of The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Sowore alleged that “security forces opened fire shortly after the protest began at the front of the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.”
