Police Says Sowore Was Not Re-Arrested, Reveals Why He Was Taken To Prison

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially “denied media reports” claiming that Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, was immediately rearrested on “fresh charges” shortly after being granted bail on Friday afternoon.

Media reports had circulated that police “re-arrested” Sowore right after he left the court and that he was “expected to be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday for a different offence.”

Force Public Relations Officer (PRO), CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, addressed these reports and questioned the procedural logic, stating: “your story that he was arrested on a fresh charge and ‘whisked away…to Kuje Prison…to be arraigned on Monday is procedurally incorrect. A person arrested on a fresh charge cannot be taken straight to prison. No prison will accept such a person without a remand warrant duly issued by a competent court.”

Hundeyin further clarified that Sowore was taken to the correctional facility only to fulfill his bail requirements, noting that “he was taken to prison as instructed on the attached remand warrant pending when he meets his bail conditions, nothing more!”

Sowore was first arrested on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Abuja after meeting with the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He was then taken into custody at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command until Friday morning.

The police had stated that Sowore was arrested for flouting a “lawful Court order which barred his group from protesting around the Three-Arm Zone in Abuja.”
